Hi,
Anyone else having charging issues on ID5? I've got a 2022 ID5 Style pro performance and until the last 3 months or so it has been charging fine on my 7.5kwh Hive charger - now however it is only charging at 3.7kwh max. My 2024 ID3 charges fine, as do other electric cars I have plugged in.
This has been into my local VW dealer twice now. The first time they kept it for a week and didn't do anything with it (blamed it on the number of 'emergency' drop-offs they had to deal with. The second time they had it for over a week, advised me that it was charging fine and that the diagnostics did not reveal any problems. When challenged on what I do now they advised me to seek a second opinion from another dealer!! I even provided evidence that the issue was happening and they still have not accepted there is a problem.
So now I have a car that charges no quicker than on a 3-pin plug...
ID5 Charging Issues
Problems like this can be tricky to solve but it’s always a good idea to think back to what may have changed around the time the unwanted behaviour started:-
Electrical work at home?
A recent car service?
Fiddling with car settings (make sure you haven’t set a charging schedule with reduced power)?
Software updates* (car or Hive)?
Does the problem occur all the time, or only at night? Does the ID5 charge at full power on other chargers? Especially another Hive if you have access to one.
Have you double checked the cable you’re using is rated for 7kW – a lower rated cable would deffo throttle the charger?
You’ve been back to VW without resolution, but have you tried Hive’s helpline? It’s 0333 202 1054
Sorry for the lack of magic bullet, but hopefully the above will be hepful. Do post back how you get on….
* What software versions are you on? Your ID5 should be on at least 3.2 by now, and Hive have posted
https://community.hivehome.com/s/articl ... -to-v1-4-5
that there’s an update in the offing, if you have the EO charger. Maybe this will help?

Hi,
Thanks for coming back to me.
We've had no electrical work at home, the only time the car has been in was to diagnose the charging issues - service isn't due until end of September.
The software for the ID5 is 3.2, and the Hive link you sent was dated August 24 - this has been occuring since at least March 24 possibly longer. I have spoken to Hive in the past and they have said that it is the car that dictates the charge and not the charger, and that the charger is functioning as normal. I also have a 24 ID3 which charges as expected and I've had that since February. The Hive charger has a tethered cable and as it charges at 7.4kwh for other cars I am making the assumption that it is fine.
In terms of when we charge the car, we normally only charge between midnight and 5am as that is our cheap rate - I've been charging it during the day today and it is now charging at 7.4kwh, even though last night it only did it at 3.7kwh. Given this development I called Hive again and they have again advised that there is nothing wrong with the voltage that the car is displaying. I'm now going to do the following:
1. Charge the ID3 during the day to see how it behaves
2. Charged the ID5 on a different home charger to see how it behaves
Frustrating!!

A good step-by step approach means that you've eliminated a hardware fault as a possible cause, since it will charge at 7.4kW during the day,
This means that it's most likely a settings issue, or, less likely, a software fault (it's worth checking that Hive post again to make sure you have V1.4.5).
Double check in your car's Charging settings that "Reduce AC charging current" is not set in either your charging location settings or the global (cog icon) charging settings.
Having said all that, have a look at this post
https://www.id3forums.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=2631
from the ID3 forum. People were seeing similar issues with various chargers (including EO) back in 2022/3 but I would have thought they'd be sorted by now.....

Hi,
I appear to be running the correct version of everything - and the reduce AC current is off.
Maybe not something that will be resolved...

Hi,
You mentioned you also have an ID.3 and was wondering if you maybe have two chargers?
I also own an ID.5 and an ID.3 and when charging both at the same time (on two chargers), the ID.3 doesn't pull more than 3.4kW.
I found a few others complaining online and the root cause seems to be the limitation of the power circuit feeding the house which simply can't support the full load.
Even if you are not charging two cars at the same time, maybe you do use other power hungry appliances (washing machine with dryer) which add up to the consumption and slow down your EV charging.
It's all theoretical as I've not been able to find anything official but to me, it makes sense.
Regards

Hi,
Have you fixed the issue?
We have a Tesla wall charger, It charges the Tesla at 7.4kW every time, all the time. However the ID.5 (72 plate) it will charge the car at 3.5kW every time, unless I tell the car to stop charging, then to re-start, then it charges at 7.4kW. Its booked in to VW to investigate, however they have said I will need to prove its not an issue with the charger.
